Abstract

Protection is a very important aspect of power system. To an undergraduate and post graduate student, the learning of the course poses a major challenge, as often the course treatment is not backed up with field visits, simulation, demonstrations etc. Modern simulation tools can be used as an active learning tool, to augment class room teaching. Further, simulations results can be demonstrated without expensive infrastructure and drastically improve the level of understanding of the subject. This paper presents a systematic approach using simulation through PSCAD>sup/sup<, to enhance the teachinglearning experience of transmission line protection using distance relay with auto-recloser feature. The response of the protection system is studied and analyzed when a fault occurs in the system. Simple exercises are posed to augment the self-learning experience of the student to further strengthen the concept of the topic.
